What is Pilates?

This system of physical fitness developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient and graceful movement.

The Mindful Movement Center of Maui is proud to offer one of the most popular exercises today. A decade ago, people had heard of Pilates and it seemed to be associated with a movement form that was appropriate mainly for dancers. Today, it is found in nearly every gym, private studios in most towns/cities, and even Physical Therapy clinics throughout the world. Pilates is designed for every person, every body…dancers, seniors, pregnant women, athletes, and post-surgery for rehabilitation.

There are Six Main Principles in Pilates: Centering, Control, Dynamic Fluid Movement or Flow, Breath, Precision and Concentration. These principles are essential ingredients in a high quality workout. The method has always emphasized quality over quantity, and you will find that, unlike many systems of exercise, Pilates exercises do not include a lot of repetitions for each move. Instead, doing each exercise fully, with precision, yields significant results in a shorter time than one would ever imagine.

Pilates Equipment comes in various forms: The Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Small Barrel, and Ladder Barrel are the main pieces. In many studios now you will find additional equipment & props such as therabands, arcs, BOSU Balance Trainers, yoga balls, yoga straps, and much more. It is an exercise that can be modified to accommodate everyone’s needs, abilities and comfort levels.

Pilates also comprises of a mat work series utilizing no equipment apparatus. These are great exercises to learn, as one can take the information home and perform the exercises as homework for added benefit, and quicker results.

Here, at The Mindful Movement Center of Maui we offer specialized instruction on the Reformer, Cadillac, and Auxiliary (Ladder Barrel & Wunda Chair), as well as Mat work. If you are new to Pilates, NO PROBLEM! We will give you a postural assessment on your first visit and begin to teach you Essential Exercises to prepare you for the workouts. These “EE’s” as we call them, will help develop your awareness, control, and isolation of your body parts  so you can learn to move them with efficiency, proper alignment, and integration.
